Gameplay Examples

This is a sample overt and overt responses:

Turn: The player for Nightshadow, a cat burglar with the ability to become insubstantial, decides that Nightshadow will rob the bank at Fifth and Third. Here's the player's overt order for the turn:

Overt: The GM determines that the Crimson Creeper, a hero who walks on walls, is passing the bank just at the time the Nightshadow walks into the bank. At this point, an overt is generated to each player. The GM sends a brief explanation to each player. The Crimson Creeper's player also gets a copy of the relevant parts of Nightshadow's turn.

Overt Responses: What happens next is up to the players. Each player will determine how their character reacts, writing as detailed a response as possible based on what they know of the other character.

Nightshadow's response: "Well, Nightshadow isn't a fighter, so unless the Creeper draws attention to himself Nightshadow will continue with the plan: walk into the bank, get the loot, and out the back wall. If the Creeper starts a fight, Nightshadow will try to ignore him by going insubstantial and continuing into the bank. As long as the Creeper can't get into the bank, Nightshade should be able to get away with the loot. If the Creeper tries to use his hypnotic eye beams, Nightshadow freaks out and (assuming he isn't hypnotized) drops insubstantial into the sewers to get away."

Crimson Creeper's response: "Nightshadow's not much fun, since he has that tendency to go insubstantial, but I don't think Creeper knows that yet. So his first action will be his patented direct attack, leaping from a wall onto Nightshadow yelling 'Evildoers beware!!'. When he picks himself up off the ground (presumably after falling through an insubstantial Nightshadow), he'll rethink the situation. Nightshadow has probably gone into the bank by now. The Creeper would guess that he'd got out the back, and will meet him there and try the old' hypnotic eye beams on him. If that works, he'll turn Nightshadow over to the local police in his usual fashion (hanging Nightshadow by his feet outside the police station)."

Overt Outcome: The GM compares both players responses and determines the outcome of the overt. In this case, it comes down to whether the Crimson Creeper can hypnotize Nightshadow; he'll only get one chance before Nightshadow drops into the sewers. The GM rolls the dice and...Nightshadow is hypnotized! The results are sent to each player.

Gazette: At this point, the Crimson Creeper's player is free to write this story in any way that he sees fit, as long as it roughly matches the overt results and fairly represents Nightshadow. The player is sent Nightshadow's overt response so that he can see how Nightshadow would react to various actions of the Crimson Creeper.
